Liver and Biliary Disease

Endoscopy is an essential tool in the management of liver disease — from variceal surveillance and banding in cirrhotic patients, to ERCP for biliary stones and strictures, to EUS for staging of pancreatic tumours. At SALi, our endoscopists have specific expertise in liver disease-related endoscopy — they understand the unique risks in patients with portal hypertension and coagulopathy.

Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD) for variceal surveillance and banding
ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) for bile duct stones and strictures
EUS (endoscopic ultrasound) for staging pancreatic and biliary tumours
Endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) for bleeding oesophageal varices
Balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (BRTO) for gastric varices

Our Approach to Endoscopy Treatment

Variceal Management
Endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) is the gold standard for treating bleeding oesophageal varices — we perform it routinely in cirrhotic patients, including emergency sessions.
ERCP
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) allows us to remove bile duct stones, dilate strictures, and place stents — all without open surgery.
EUS Staging
Endoscopic ultrasound gives us the most accurate staging of pancreatic and distal bile duct tumours — essential for surgical planning and resectability assessment.
Portal Hypertension Expertise
Our endoscopists are specifically trained in the management of portal hypertension complications — understanding the risks of endoscopy in patients with low platelets and abnormal clotting.
Biliary Stenting
We place plastic and metal biliary stents endoscopically for palliation of biliary obstruction from pancreatic cancer, cholangiocarcinoma and bile duct strictures.
Liver Biopsy
Endoscopic and image-guided liver biopsy for definitive histological diagnosis of parenchymal liver disease, mass lesions and post-transplant complications.
