Liver Disease

Specialist physiotherapists who know the safe exercise limits for patients with liver disease — pre and post-operative rehabilitation programmes.

Why Physiotherapy Matters

Exercise Designed
Around Your Liver

Exercise for patients with liver disease is not the same as exercise for healthy individuals. A patient with decompensated cirrhosis and ascites has very different safe limits from a post-transplant patient 6 weeks after surgery. At SALi, our physiotherapists have specific training in liver disease — they understand portal hypertension, muscle wasting (sarcopaenia), and the graded rehabilitation required after major liver surgery.

Pre-operative conditioning to improve fitness before major liver surgery
Post-operative respiratory physiotherapy to prevent chest complications
Early mobilisation programme after liver transplantation
Sarcopaenia assessment and targeted resistance exercise programme
Safe aerobic exercise prescription for patients with cirrhosis
Long-term exercise plans for LiCAP patients with fatty liver disease

What We Offer

Our Approach to Physiotherapy for Liver Disease

Pre-Op Conditioning
Patients who are physically stronger before liver surgery have fewer complications and faster recovery. We start conditioning 4–6 weeks before planned operations.
Post-Transplant Rehab
We begin physiotherapy the day after transplant surgery — early mobilisation reduces ICU stay, prevents muscle wasting and dramatically speeds overall recovery.
Respiratory Physio
After upper abdominal surgery, respiratory complications are the most common cause of extended hospital stay. Our physiotherapists start breathing exercises immediately post-op.
Sarcopaenia Management
Muscle wasting (sarcopaenia) in liver disease significantly worsens outcomes. We assess it precisely and prescribe targeted resistance exercise to reverse it.
Safe Exercise for Cirrhosis
We prescribe structured, graded aerobic exercise for cirrhotic patients — safely, within haemodynamic limits, improving fitness and quality of life without triggering decompensation.
LiCAP Exercise Plans
For fatty liver patients on our LiCAP programme, we prescribe specific exercise regimens proven to reduce liver fat — 150+ minutes of moderate activity per week, structured and supervised.
